India has largest number of illiterates in the world.
India will take at least 5 decades to attain universal literacy while female universal literacy will take around 6 decades, according to a study released by Harvard University, Kerala is estimated to take the minimum time 1.2 decades for universal literacy for all and 1.3 decades for female literacy; Bihar will take the maximum (9.7 decades for universal literacy and 12.1 decades for female literacy ) Madhya Pradesh will take 5.6 decades to attain universal literacy, UP 7.1 decades, Rajasthan 7.3 decades, AP 6.6 decades and Orissa 6.3 decades.
Government is trying hard to provide education to every person, for this government is spending lot of money on various educational programmes. Government has set a target of increasing expenditure on education from present 3.6 percent of GDP to over 6 percent by 2015.
Besides providing basic education at school level, Universities play important role in the overall development of the Society. Higher/Technical Education is becoming big business in India and there is immense scope in setting up of Universities in various parts of the country.
